5:30 – 8:30 PM

So much to do at the Science Fair! Join all 186 Bonny Slope Scientists, enjoy their research and celebrate the science. Be ready for fun and prizes when you participate in the BSSF scavenger hunt, and stop by the many scientific discovery stations – play with the Lego Robotics, test out the Nike Force Plate, learn about wind turbines (and paper airplanes) from PacificCorp, visit Portland Community College’s M&M chromatography table and taste test strips, and view some very cool optical illusions. In addition, the science fair is hosting its first raffle, so buy those raffle tickets starting this Friday at the Scrip table and be eligible for some amazing prizes!

We will be participating in Nike’s Shoe Recycling and Sustainability Program which uses very worn and battered shoes that are not wearable and turns them into Nike Grind, a material used in sports surfaces and play grounds. So please bring your old shoes to the collection bin at the Nike station and join us in the ‘reuse a shoe’ program.

We do need volunteers to help with this event. This is a great opportunity for grandparents or retired neighbors to get involved with young people. A 90 minute commitment for 3 or 4 weeks would be ideal, but isn’t required.  No experience needed…just enthusiasm.  Sign up on the community bulletin board in the main hallway or e-mail your class coordinator.

Early Bird Science Winner!

At the end of Friday’s assembly, an early-bird drawing took place from all the Science project registration forms which were turned into the office.  Kylie Drew, a 4th grader from Miss Taylor’s class, won a Science kit to explore the process of making “snow”.  She and her Scientist partner, Kendra Werstlein, have chosen to examine the idea of “Sticky Pennies” in their experiment.  Sounds intriguing!

This week, students learned about the Scientific Methodology as Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and ALC classes observed how hard liquid soap worked to break down fat molecules and 3rd through 5th grade classes discovered how much their sense of taste relies on their nose!  Ask your child about the fun Science experiments they experienced in class and how the mnemonic “I Have Einstein’s Rules Clear” helps them remember the five steps towards creating a great experiment.

Don’t forget that all project registration forms are due by Friday, January 30th.  And, pre-orders for dinner from The Old Spaghetti Factory can also be made on the same form.  Join us for the Science Fair on the evening of February 27th for good food and great fun!

Only a Nose Knows Science!

Today marked the kick-off of our 1st annual Science Fair where Mr. Traller trusted his nose to Science. At the Friday assembly, students were excited and captivated to learn about scientific principles discovered by our Featured Scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, as balls were bounced to amazing heights, different forces acted upon everyday objects, and Mr. Traller felt the rush of a bowling ball swinging directly at his/her face! The audience eagerly listened as we heard about several awesome activities planned for the upcoming, fun-filled Science Fair on February 27th, where everyone is invited to enjoy an evening of exploration and discovery.
