Make February a Big Box Top Month!

The last Box Top submission deadline for money we receive this year is the end of February. Clip those Box Tops and make it a big month!  Don’t worry, our classroom competition will continue through the end of April.  The top two classrooms will receive a free period of PE and an ice cream sundae party. Mr. Epstein’s classroom is in the lead with Mrs. Williamson’s class a close second.  Mrs. Williamson’s class also won the Bobcat for the month of January with 356 Box Tops turned in, the most for any single month this school year.  Way to go!

Art Literacy – James Lavadour

James Lavadour – Sun Spots: Red Trees 2007

“I don’t think that a person needs to understand me or my background to benefit from my painting. All that’s required is a receptive heart and an open mind.”

Bonny Slope student artists are studying the life and work of James Lavadour over the next 6 weeks. He was born in 1951 in Pendleton, Oregon, to the Walla Walla Tribe on the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

As a young boy, James would take walks with his father through the canyons and gaze at the cliffs and ridges. He found that he had an amazing ability to “see” beyond the obvious. The landscape became figures of humans and animals drumming, singing and dancing. James Lavadour continues these walks today. He does not paint on location or from photographs. Rather he paints from the memories, dreams and images he experiences during his time in nature. Lavadour has been slowly discovered over the years. He has had exhibitions from Oregon to Switzerland. His work can be seen during the month of April at the PDX Contemporary
Gallery in Portland. He continues to paint in the upper story of an abandoned school house, on the Umatilla Reservation. The lower level is The Crows Institute of Arts, which he established in 1992 to provide opportunities for Native American artists. Student artists will create and abstract collage of different mediums while exploring the meanings and emotions connected to color. The lesson is also an exercise in letting art “happen.” Look for examples of their work throughout the school during the next few weeks.

Have a HEART for Haiti!

Have a HEART for Haiti!

At this week’s Friday assembly, Bonny Slope kicked off our global community outreach effort to raise money for those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Haiti. We are calling our COIN DRIVE, “Have a HEART for Haiti.”

Over the past week, students have overwhelmed us with their desire to “take action” and make a difference for those affected by this terrible tragedy that took place just 10 days ago. Many staff members have been touched by our students’ heartfelt desire to make a difference. One child said,“The children living in Haiti did not have much to start with, and now they have even less.”
For the next two weeks, Bonny Slope students will be encouraged to collect coins (or dollars) in any creative way possible. Each class will have a collection jar. As children donate, they will have an opportunity to write a short note on a heart. All hearts will be posted on a wall in the front hallway, eventually forming a large “HEART for Haiti.” We hope to have our HEART constructed by the end of next week. At our Friday, February 5th assembly we will highlight creative ways that children raised money for Haiti. We will present our final check to Mercy Corps, a Northwest-based organization that is working to supply aid to Haitians where it is most needed.
In addition, our teacher staff is hosting a Bootcamp for Haiti Fundraiser on Saturday, February 6th, 9am-10am in the gym at Bonny Slope Elementary.

$10 per person and ALL proceeds go directly to our local Mercy Corps to be passed on where needed. ANY fitness level encouraged…so please bring your family and friends and join in on an hour of fun, sweat, laughter and charity.

If you would like more details or would like to participate or just come on down and join the fun, please email Amy Mitchell amtraining1@yahoo.com or if you are on Facebook, you can RSVP on the Facebook event HERE.
